The Success SHIFT

Jul 1, 2021

Every girl in the world has this dilemma, especially during “that time of the month”. For about a quarter of each month, we can feel uncomfortable, with bloating and aches or even severe pain, not to mention any mood swings as our hormones take us on a roller coaster ride.

It goes by many names. The red days, the curse, or being “on the rag”.

In more politically correct terms, it is our menstrual cycle.

Historically and still in many cultures, girls and women have been called “unclean” and separated from their community — deprived of education and the opportunity to partake in normal activities.

It’s been held up as one of the most visible signs held up of women’s inferiority… the weaker sex… like there’s something wrong with us.

It’s also been a cause of shame, embarrassment, and humiliation if we don’t have adequate hygiene products to “catch the drip”.

These are just some complaints we girls usually have.

But what if we don’t have access to one of the basic necessities every girl needs?

A sanitary napkin or tampons?

I wonder how you would feel? Or perhaps you’ve been there?

Frankly, I’d be surprised if there’s a single woman out there who hasn’t.

To my male listeners, please listen and learn so you know what your mothers, sisters, partners, and daughters go through for a quarter of their mature lives.

In today’s episode, I have invited Celeste Mergens. She's a beautiful soul, beautiful inside and out.

Celeste is the founder and CEO of Days for Girls International.

What started as a simple question in the middle of the night to ask how girls manage their periods in an overcrowded orphanage in Kenya, turned into a global movement that is working to bring dignity, education, and opportunities to millions of women and girls around the world.

Today, Days for Girls has reached over 2.1 million women and girls in 144 countries with menstrual kids and community health education.

Days for girls is a two-time Girl Effects Champion, and won the seat award for Gender Equity and Entrepreneurship.

The Huffington Post has named it as the next 10 organizations to change the world in the next decade.

Celeste has also been featured in Oprah's O magazine, Forbes, and Stanford Social Innovation Review.

And now, we at the Global S.H.I.F.T. Initiative are thrilled to announce that Days for Girls is our chosen charity. A portion of all of our 30-Day Success Without Sacrifice Training courses will go to support Days for Girls.

It’s time to normalize this conversation and part of life — and provide dignity, safety, and equality for all girls and women.

See you on the podcast!
